Introductions

Please introduce yourself with standard bio info (name, major, year in school, future career plans, etc.).  Please let us know if you have had any recent experience with death.

This is me at home.  I've been at TMC since 1999 and think that this class is the best.  We are going to have a great semester!

  5. My name is Charles DeMoss. I am a Sophomore. I am undeclared, and have no idea what major to choose. I don't have any career plans. I have been in car accidents where I could have potentially died, but obviously nothing major happened to me (unless I am a member of the living dead, but I don't think that is very likely).

  6. My name is Emily Benkovich. I am a Junior biology major with a minor in chemistry. Right now, I am Pre-Med but am not exactly sure what I would like to do. For a while I have wanted to be a Forensic Pathologist (Medical Examiner). They try to determine the cause of death of a person by examining a corpse and investigating.

  7. Hello! I'm Elizabeth Hageman. I am an English major with a Psychology minor. Currently, I am making arrangements to go to Grad school for English next year. After getting my MA in English Lit I plan on going for my PhD in order to teach college. My most recent death experience was over the summer, I had a cancer scare that really brought the question of my own mortality to light. So luck for me everything worked out and I'm cancer free. I plan on living a long life, with a new found respect for how quickly death could happen to any of us.

  9. My name is Chelsea Tolliver. I am a senior majoring in accounting with a minor in English. I hope to one day become a successful CPA and work in an accounting firm. I am a student assistant on the Women's Basketball team since I am no longer able to play. As far as relating to this class goes, I have been through two near death experiences. The first one happened on June 26, 2011 when I was air cared to UC Hospital because my colon had ruptured and I needed emergency surgery. I had been admitted to St. E Hospital on June 23 for blood clots in my lungs. From St. E I was taken to UC for an emergency surgery that lasted six and a half hours. I was in so much pain and the only thing I remember asking the doctors before the surgery was, "Is the pain going to be gone?" They assured me that the pain would be gone, however, they left out the most important part, would I make it through the surgery or not? It took three different doctors to perform the surgery that I needed and every so often they would update my family to let them know how I was doing. When they first cut me open they said there was poison and toxins everywhere and it took over 9 liters to clean out my system. They didn't think I was going to make it at all because of all the poison and they were afraid it had damaged other vital organs. After a couple hours of surgery they were about 50% sure I would make it, but that I would have to have a colostomy for the rest of my life. Luckily the doctors finished my surgery and said it went better than they had expected. I had to stay in the intensive care unit for three nights because of the severity of my surgery. That was the scariest day of my life. I was put on a blood thinner called coumadin and they told me I would be on it for life. To this day I am currently still taking coumadin.
This summer I experienced another near death situation with my heart. I have an SVT and I saw an Electrophysiologist on June 4, 2012 for an ablation. I had the ablation done and it was unsuccessful. During the surgery the doctor was extremely aggressive in trying to find the problem so he could fix it, but instead it threw my heart into A-fib and he had to stop the surgery right away. For about fifteen hours after the surgery was performed my heart rate was up and down and wasn't able to stabilize. Once again the doctors were afraid that I wasn't going to make it because they had never seen someone's heart rate fluctuate and exceed seven hours. I was hooked up to oxygen as well because my oxygen level kept dropping every time my heart rate fell. Fortunately, my family and friends were by my side through the entire thing and my heart rate returned back to normal after fifteen hours.
After living through these two near death experiences, I can honestly say that every day I live life to the fullest and I'm not afraid to take chances. I live Forever Strong! :)

  10. Hey guys! My name is Jessica Wells. I am currently a senor getting my BES with minor in Gerontology. I currently work at Emeritus, which is an assisted living facility. I work in the memory care unit where I deal with residents who have Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other memory affecting diseases. I have been working there for almost two months and in those months I have had three to pass. They did not pass when I was actively on duty; however I was there to see them get worse with each passing day. My future as of right now is unclear. For the longest time I wanted to be a nurse and this is what I originally started my major in up till this semester. Now I still want to keep nursing in mind, but I want to explore my options that are out there. After I graduate in May, I want to join Ameri Corp. With Ameri Corp, I can partake in many different areas of interest. After a few years in Ameri Corp, I hope to either be reassured that nursing is the field in which I want to go into or see if my interests change. Everyone has their escape to find who they are in life. Ameri Corp hopefully is mine.

  11. Hey, my name is Robert Bramer, though I usually go by Andy. I'm a Sophomore biology major hoping to be accepted into a med school at the end of my time here at Thomas More College. I've struggled with the issue of death a lot and I've lost sleep over it before. I've had small panic attacks about it all my life and I continue to struggle with it. I'm hoping this course will help me work through my issues and give me a better understanding of life in general.

  12. Hey! My name is Lauren Dahman. I'm a junior nursing major with a minor (just declared!) in gerontology. I currently work for St. Charles Care Center as a Dietary Aide and I also work as an in home companion. In other words I help bath fed medicate and clean the homes of elderly couples. My dream job is to be a Nurse at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Last May my grandmother (92) fell and broke her hip and wasn't found in her home till 10 hours later by a woman walking her dog. There are so many details I left out but after surgery she wouldn't wake up. The Nurse came in and called for respiratory Stat being a nursing student I knew this wasn't good. She finally woke up and proceeded to tell us about her trip to heaven and back. There is actually a youtube video of her retelling the story

  13. Hey everyone! I'm Amanda Chucta. I am a Junior Nursing major. I am not positive what field i would exactly like to go into but I know in my field I will have to deal with death and dying. I also have lost very important people in my life so far though. I only have one living grandparent, and my senior year in high school my best friend, Brandi passed away. Only being 18 at the time, it was hard to wrap my head around. How could a young beautiful girl be taken out of my life. But from this experience I gained maturity and strength. And I will forever Follow My Bliss. This was Brandi's favorite saying, simply meaning to follow your own happiness. I surround myself with positive people and positive experiences in order to be sure I am living my life to the fullest and that I am happy everyday, never take a single day for granted!

  14. Hello. I am Mary Kay Cox. I graduated from EKU in the mid 80"s with a BBA in Administrative Management and a minor in Psychology. I worked in Mortgage Banking for many years before electing to stay home and raise our two boys. I homeschooled my youngest from 5th to 12th grade. He is now attending NKU. My oldest works full-time at our family business. I play tons of tennis, work out, read constantly and four-wheel in my spare time. I have had many experiences with death the most personal being when I lost all my platelets and was bleeding out. Luckily I went into remission after a year of treatment. That experience gave me a new perspective on life and I try and keep it front and center at all times. In a nutshell - don't sweat the small stuff and most of it is small!

  15. Hey everyone, my name is Dalton O'Brien and I am a senior Biology major here at TMC, and have no idea as to my next step in life. As of right now I am going into Physical Therapy, but I am not 100% fixed on that career path and basically only chose it because my advisor made me, in order to register for classes this fall semester. I unfortunately have had death play a major role in my life the past two summers. In the summer of 2011, I had a friend of mine named Greg (who was 16 at the time) get into a freak ATV accident and was air lifted to downtown Louisville, but shortly after was unable to make it (always wear a helmet). Most recently, this summer my dad lost his best friend John, who was like a father figure to me. We had found out in the spring semester that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (which is pretty much a death sentence), and although he fought very hard over the next several months, the cancer spread throughout his body and he passed away on June 16. These two experiences have changed the way I view life, and not a day goes by that I don't think about them. Now, I always try to live life as best I can, and encourage everyone else to do the same.

  17. Hi everyone! I'm Katie High. I'm a junior nursing student. I'm not sure what field I want to get into, but I want to work with kids, so hopefully there won't be much dying there, but you never know what could happen. I haven't had a near death experience yet, and most of the family members I have that died did so when I was really young. I'm praying nothing happens soon.

  18. Im Tim Gormly. I still have everyone in my family I do not have much experience with death. I have only been to 2 funerals in my life and one of them I was too young to remember. However there is one thing i forgot to mention in class. My dad is in the homicide department in the city of cincinnati and seen a lot of people killing each other and people killing themselves. There are some horrible stories that I don't think i could deal with on a daily basis.

  19. I'm Nick Jackson. My major is business administration and I graduate in the spring. I plan on becoming a real estate agent after graduation. I play football here at TMC.
I don't have much experience with death, I've only had one relative die in my life time and I was not affected much by it. Besides that I have been in a couple car accidents and suffered a few sports injuries, but nothing life threatening.

  20. I'm Nick Shad. My major is sports and entertainment marketing. I plan on working in the marketing department for a sports team once I graduate from TMC. I have had very little experience with death in my life. Last Christmas my family found out that my uncle has stage four brain cancer. As of right now all things are going "well" for him, but the doctors have told our family to prepare for the worst within a year or two. So hopefully this class can help me to prepare for the unfortunate things that will eventually come in everyone's life, the death of a loved one.

  22. I am Brigid Burwinkel I am a junior Biology major here at TMC.
I have had some experience with death though the deaths of my elderly relatives. Death has yet to really hit me hard because the deaths I have experienced are with the elderly, people whose time has come and not with people my own age or with people I am really close to.

  23. My name is Jeramie Connor and I am a senior at Thomas More. Due to the fact that I have over a years’ worth of military credit hours I am getting my Bachelors in Elected Studies. It is basically an individualized program that allows me to take whatever classes to get me to 128 hours so I can graduate. I am however getting my Associates in History and Communications. The area my degree is in is irrelevant because upon graduation I will be an 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. In order to become an officer a person must obtain a college degree to commission. My goal is to become an Intelligence Officer. My long term goal is do at least 10 year in the Marine Corps and then work for the CIA. However, if the needs of the Marine Corps call me to do a full 20 years and then retire I will gladly serve as long as I can. I’m getting married to my beautiful fiancée on October 5, 2013. Carly is the love of my life and I truly fortunate to have found someone who can deal with the struggles of a military lifestyle.
