that just happened last Monday. I am posting this because I can relate this to our recent discussion on advanced directives. It is obvious that anybody can die at any time, especially in the case of a severe natural disaster. This is a very good reason to have an advanced directive as soon as possible.
Hurricane Sandy happened last Monday around the Northeastern part of the U.S. It is said that it killed at least 11 people in that area. This was scary because I have a cousin who lives in Brooklyn New york. He says that it was indeed frightening and that the city is still recovering. Fortunately he was not harmed.
ReplyDeleteNatural disasters are incidents that humans have no control over and could harm or kill anyone at any time. This is another great reason to have an advanced directive.
Peter, I'm glad that your cousin wasn't harmed by Hurricane Sandy. I can't even imagine what it would be like to experience something like that. It makes me sick just thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteI feel terrible for all of the families that lost their loved ones due to Hurricane Sandy.
As you mentioned above, natural disasters are incidents that humans have no control over and it could harm/kill anyone at anytime. I have said this many times in my posts, anything can happen to anyone at anytime so we need to live life to the fullest. Along with Peter's point, we also should have an advance directive or living will so that our loved ones know what to do in certain circumstances. By having an advance directive or living will it will make things go more smoothly during a hard time.
I am very glad your cousin was not harmed Peter. However, it is important no matter how young you are to have an advanced directive. It is important to have at least one person that you are close to know what you want in times when you are not able to speak for yourself. For the people in Hurricane Sandy, my prayers go out to them. During this hard time, having an advanced directive will make the times easier on the family and friends.
ReplyDeleteNow is an important time for those victims of the storm to re-write or create such documents as advanced directives. In the face of death and disaster perhaps the importance will become more real and all those people who faced death and lived anyway will take their mortality seriously. I hope and pray that the victims of the super storm will get back on their feet quickly.
ReplyDeleteI was at the BMV this past week and came across the stack of advanced directives papers that were free to the public. They didn't have anything around them saying take one or how important the were. I feel like more people would be impulsed to take them and fill them out if there was more information attached to them. it was nice to see that the were out there and avaliable to the public that came into the office, however there was not follow up directions or information about them. I guess I should have said something to the state of Ohio to get the word out better.
ReplyDeleteSandy was a horrible event and will likely be remembered for years to come. Advanced directives are a valuable asset for those who are critically injured or diseased, but do they really serve a larger purpose to those who are dead? I know the hospice women that came two weeks ago said something about burial arrangements, but is it a very detailed account of your funeral wishes? If someone would mind answering this, I would really appreciate it.

ReplyDeleteI my opinion it is kind of sad that it takes a natural disaster or a recent loss to get people thinking about advanced directives. My parents talked to me about this when I turned 18, and I feel that it is important for all legal adults (18+) to at least look into advanced directives. And to Andy's question, I think the hospice ladies said it can be as detailed as the person wants. The burial arrangements can be generic or specific to the liking of the person filling out the advanced directive.
Natural disasters happen everyday. As stated previously, death can occur in any moment. Someone can die today to next week or live to be 100, but no one knows the exact date in which they will die. Advanced Directives are beneficial for everyone. This allows for all parties to know exactly what you want and it can cause less fighting and drama within families.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is something very important to talk about with family. As we have seen in recent years, natural disasters can happen at anytime and be very devistating. They can destroy homes, families and cause huge financial problems. Being prepared for a natural disaster, or death in the case of this class, can help the end situation. Being prepared with advanced directives and wills can save time, money and family relationships.
ReplyDeleteThis event was a huge eye opener I believe. In this life nothing is guaranteed and that includes life. Life is very unpredictable and anything can happen. Natural Disasters are devastating and could very well happen in our area such as a tornado. With this being said I agree that it is important to have advanced directives and wills drawn up. I agree with what Amanda said about being prepared saves time, money, and family relationships. I have experienced this firsthand with losing family ties because of greedy people who were so greedy they even took family members to court so that they could get more money. They lost but still if a will was drawn up which showed my grandmother's wishes then my uncle wouldn't have gotten the chance of wasting time, and money a long with burning bridges.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think about it, it really shouldn't take a natural disaster to begin thinking about an advanced directive. Indeed, it presents itself as an opportune time to think about an advanced directive, but even a lot of the more common crime occurences should allow us to think about an advanced directive. For instance, as previously stated in the article, any one of us could die today or tomorrow. We hear about various incidents, accidents, and crimes that occur in our everyday lives. This could happen to any one of us. As such, it is of great importance to talk about advanced directive as soon as possible. Being prepared to die saves a lot of people from having to experience extra stress, tough decision making, and even family disagreements.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt Hurricane Sandy was a tragedy that devastated the east coast. However I dont believe that it was any kind of life changing event for people around the world. Natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the Japan tsunami of 2011 were much more devastating and really got people such as myself thinking about life, death, and prevention. Living here in the midwest natural disasters are not much of a risk to us and therefor the only natural disaster I have prepared for is the zombie apocalypse.
ReplyDeleteHurricane Sandy was tough and i couldn't believe they were about to run the marathon when people didnt even have places to live. Advanced directives are important to make sure your fmaily know exactly what to do. it can eliminate alot of stress and enxiety that people would have to deal with if the person didnt have one of these.
